As per our ancient epics and scriptures it is mentioned that a demon named “Tripurasur” had fought and defeated Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Takshak. He had caused havoc in the lives of all people. Therefore all the gods approached Lord Shiva for help in getting rid of this evil demon. Lord Shiva then wore his Bow and Arrow along-with his special weapon called “Kaalagni”. Thereafter he is believed to have meditated for thousand divine years to attain powers to kill Tripurasur. Due to the fatigue of meditation and happiness, tears dropped from his eyes and at places where these tears fell rudraksha trees are believed to have emerged.

Another time Lord Shiva was pained to see the suffering of man in going through the repeated cycle of birth and death. He was pained as man was not able to attain salvation (moksha) from this unending cycle. Due to the deep pain that he felt tear drops started to flow from his eyes and at places where these tear drops fell Rudraksha trees are supposed to have grown. The seeds of these trees (Rudraksha) are believed to have the powers to provide moksha(salvation) from the cycle of birth and death. That was one reason why since ancient time, sages and other holy men in pursuit of moksha wore Rudraksha, which is a wonderful gift to mankind from Lord Shiva.

According to Shiv-Mahapuran, Parvati the divine-consort of Shiva asked about Rudraksha and Lord Shiva hearing her question said that he had done penance for 1000 years and tired of keeping his eyes closed he opened them and few tear drops fell to the earth and from these Rudraksha trees are supposed to have grown.

RUDRAKSHA – ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION

Rudraksha beads are the most ancient beads, which grows on Elaeocarpus Ganitrus Roxb trees at selected locations of South East Asia (Java, Korea, parts of Malaysia, Taiwan, China) and South Asia (Northern India and Nepal). Rudraksha is the purest, the most effective, useful, ancient beads. Rudraksha is the seed of a fruit. It grows in bunches. They bloom in May, June and ripen between September to November. Its pulp is hard and remains stuck to its seed. It is kept in water for a number of days and then Rudraksha is taken out after peeling off the pulp. Rudraksha beads are a plant product, containing Aluminium, Chlorine, Copper, Cobalt, Nickel, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Silicon, Silver and Gold. The electromagnetic properties of Rudraksha are due to these elements. The percentage compositions of gaseous elements were determined by C-H-N Analyzer and by Gas chromatography. The result shows that Rudraksha beads consist of 50.031% carbon, 0.95% nitrogen, 17.897% hydrogen and 30.53% oxygen. The original whitish color of Rudraksha is dyed into orange color which is a symbolic color of the saints and sages.

What are Rudraksha beads? Where are they available?

Rudraksha beads are the living seeds of a fruit. The Rudraksha tree is addressed as the Elaecarpus Ganitrus Roxb in the botanical world and the seeds from the fruit of this tree are the mystical Rudraksha. The clefts or the thorny contured surface of this bead are called Mukhis (faces). The islands of Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Bali, Timor, modern day Indonesia and certain parts of Nepal house the magnificent Rudraksha tree. This is where it grows in abundance. If the percentage of trees based only on geographic distribution was to be considered, then 70% are found in Indonesia. Nepal stands at 25% and India at 5%. It is the Nepal trees that produce larger Rudraksha seeds of high quality.

Traditionally Rudraksha beads have been used very commonly in Asia. The Yogis and monks wore throughout especially during spiritual practices. What are the tests for ascertaining the genuinity of Rudraksha?

The lab testing of Rudraksha is the only way to ascertain the genuinity of the bead without cutting or damaging it. The X-ray of this bead will show one how many internal seeds are encased within the faces of the Rudraksha.

Under the magnifying glass, cracks on the Rudraksha are clearly revealed. Dropping it in boiling water melts the glue used to form higher Mukhi beads or Gauri Shankar by cutting and sticking smaller beads together. The copper coin test or sinking beads test is not 100% accurate. A genuine Rudraksha can also float.

The assured way is to procure it from a source that is ISO laboratory certified. Can the family members keep interchanging Neck Malas, Japa Malas or Rudraksha beads?

The practice of interchanging of neck mala, Jap mala and Rudraksha bead needs to be avoided. There is a relationship between the wearer and the divine bead he/she is wearing. Once the Rudraksha combination is worn by a wearer, it is very personal and must not be shared with anyone. The Rudraksha can only be willed and passed on to the next generation.

Can ladies wear Rudraksha ?

Yes! As per scriptures women can and should wear Rudraksha. It is advisable to remove them for the period when nature is at work.

Can all wear Rudraksha ?

How do we know which Rudraksha is good?

The shape and size of this bead become a source of confusion for many. One should refrain from worrying about this aspect. The Mukhi must be well defined. There should be zero cracks near the central hole. The bead should not be eaten by insects. Overall it has to be a well-defined healthy Rudraksha.

Does Rudraksha help during panic attacks ?

Yes it does! Keep a large 5 Mukhi Rudraksha with you. One is relieved of nervousness, sudden state of shock, stress if the bead is held in the palm / fist. Place it in the right palm and hold tightly for at least 10 minutes. The body will start warming up and confidence will be regained.

What is the life of Rudraksha beads?

If the bead is well protected, preserved and maintained adequately, it exhibits a very long life span. It can be passed on for several generations.

Can we wear Rudraksha on body when we have to go to cremation ground ?

No! One should strictly refrain from doing so. It has to be removed before you step into a crematorium. This is a basic Vedic practice. This norm has to be adhered to very sincerely.
